Alex Frebowitz is a patent attorney at Gearhart Law whose practice includes intellectual property and corporate matters. He works with inventors, entrepreneurs, and businesses to protect their inventions, brands, creative work, and broader business interests.
Before entering the field of law, Alex worked as a scientist. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Immunology and Infectious Diseases from Pennsylvania State University before receiving his Juris Doctor from Drexel University’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law. His scientific background continues to shape his approach, particularly his curiosity about how things happen and his ability to engage with the ideas behind a client’s work.
Alex was drawn to the law because he wanted a career that felt more challenging and meaningful. He found that in intellectual property and corporate law, where he enjoys helping clients move their ideas forward and seeing their excitement about what comes next.
His approach has always been centered on the client’s end goal. Because legal and business matters do not always have an obvious path forward, Alex values patience, flexibility, and practical problem-solving. He finds particular satisfaction in working through difficult questions and finding a workable way ahead.
Alex has also built a strong body of legal writing since graduating from law school. He received the American Bar Association IP Leadership Award at the ABA IP Leadership Spring Conference in Washington, D.C., an accomplishment he considers among the work he is most proud of. He is also the author of the LOAF IP Blog (loafip.com), where he publishes analysis on patent, trademark, and copyright law developments. He is also the founder and president of Savvility, a Pennsylvania nonprofit providing financial literacy education to Philadelphia-area high school students.
When he’s not in the office, Alex enjoys spending time with family and friends. His family shares a love of live music, and he likes attending sporting events with his father and concerts with his brother. He is also an amateur classical pianist and has played for nearly 30 years.
One quote that has stayed with him is Wayne Gretzky’s, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” For Alex, it is a reminder that starting something new, whether it is a business, an invention, or simply a different approach, often begins with being willing to take the chance.
