Our speakers:

Serge Lapointe, Fasken, Canada: Serge has solid expertise in patent protection in the life sciences sector in Canada, the United States and abroad. Serge combines his vast knowledge and his experience when drafting patent applications and preparing opinions on the validity and infringement of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and chemical patents. He gets often involved into intellectual property due diligence investigations. Serge has more than 20 years of experience working in firms and in industry, and he has acquired in-depth knowledge of the scientific and regulatory aspects of drug development. His ability to examine technology from a pragmatic business perspective is an added value for clients. Serge responds effectively to the legal and commercial needs of a varied clientele from the genomics, proteomics, pharmaceutical products and chemical industries. He has considerable experience in assisted reproductive technologies, diseases of the central nervous system, obesity, diabetes, virology, microbiology, genetic markers, blood and nephrological disorders, stem cells, nutraceuticals, and green technologies.

Jane Wu, Fasken, Canada: Jane Wu is a lawyer and trademark agent in the Intellectual Property Group in our Montreal office. As part of her practice, she advises and represents clients in copyright, trademark, patent and trade secret matters, as well as in financing and in mergers and acquisitions. As part of her practice, Jane advises, negotiates and writes contracts related to software, cloud computing, online platforms, research and development outsourcing, purchase/sales and licensing of intellectual property, technology partnerships, distribution and marketing of technology products and services, and digital marketing. Jane regularly assists corporations with financing and with mergers and acquisitions, particularly in the areas of intellectual property and technology. She also assists corporations with respect to copyright, trademark and patent law, including from a strategy perspective. A graduate of the Université de Montréal, she holds both a Bachelor of Civil Law and a Juris Doctor of Common Law. She also holds the title of Trademark Agent.

Ugo Rossi, Bugnion, European Union: Ugo specializes in copyrights, design, and patents in the technology areas of Electronics, mechanical industry, and software. Ugo has worked in the field of industrial property since 2002, mainly dealing with patenting and prosecution of patent applications in the fields of electronics, software, telecommunications and mechanical engineering and drafting written opinions on the validity and infringement of patents. He has also dealt with opposition and appeal procedures before the European Patent Office and patent disputes within and outside Italy. From 2002 to 2016, he worked at an Italian intellectual property office and joined Bugnion’s Milan Office in October 2016.

Vincenzo Melilli, Bugnion, European Union: Vincenzo specializes in copyrights, design, domain names, and trademarks. Since May 2008 he has headed Bugnion’s Design Law Department. He also provides searches and written opinions and deals with out-of-court disputes for Italian and foreign clients. He lectures on the ‘Academy e-learning portal’ of EUIPO and he is currently lecturer and researcher on Intellectual Property law in the department of Media Law of the Catholic University of the Sacred Hearth in Milan. He also lectures on IP law at the Master in “Licensing & Brand Extension” of the Politecnico – PoliDesign of Milano.
